There are two things to take into consideration when it comes to the hair: the color and the manner by which it is made. Perhaps the most prominent trend in the fall 2016 hair colors is the fact that most appear to be perfectly natural, whether we are looking at a blonde or especially the browns.
Silky chestnut is especially in it appears for the coming season where roasting chestnuts will be a most enjoyable family activity while cozying up by the fire. The top fall/ winter 2016-2017 hair color trends are:
1. Blonde: This may appear intriguing, but practically all shades of blonde are more than acceptable for the fall and winter seasons as they appear in everything from a strawberry blonde to an ash, a dirty blonde and platinum. Blonde comes in golden and in muted, brighter sunshine and nighttime dandies.

2. Brown: Just as with the blonde, the brunettes are also allowed to wear their hair as they wish, for it is seen in multiple different shades throughout, from the darker, near black coloring to the lighter, chestnut appearances. Keeping it a natural shade is what you should focus on.
3. Black: The hair is not always looking soft and lovely. Sometimes it looks dark and gothic and the beauty looks are no less enticing than the locks pulled into a deep side part and coiled in the back, gothic in the appearance as a whole. We do not see as much of the black as we would like but it is certainly trending, along with practically every other color around.
4. Ombre: The roots having grown out was never a great look in the past but now when the final product appears to be a nice ombre where the roots and the ends are not a stark contrast but a lovely continuation of getting lighter as you move lower, the look is certainly a great way to color it up. The best ombre or balayage is with blonde, the roots being a dirty blonde themselves or a light chestnut coloring.
5. Roots Grown In: The color combinations change throughout and we can say that we see a whole lot of the blonde as well as the chestnut on the runways. We also see some roots grown in and color contrasts, with black at the crown and blonde down the tresses. Rag & Bone is just one that brings in this look with pleasure.

The beauty of the fall 2016 hairstyles lies in the way the hair has been pulled back, the addition of details, the side it has the part from and so much else. Every little aspect adds to the hair’s beauty, while certain eras have a certain influence on each year’s trends. This year, we see a good lot of lovely hairstyles appearing on the runways.

#1: Show off Ultra Voluminous Hair

Volume is a top trending look when it comes to the fall 2016 hairstyles that dominate the runways from North America to Europe, New York to Milan, London and Paris. We see ombre hair with voluminous waves appear at Diane von Furstenberg and it is a look that will be great for the professional as well as the party-goer. Zac Posen’s ladies definitely enjoy the volume in their hair, coming from a lovely center part and falling around the shoulders and down the back with waves so strong they are almost curls.
It is the 1980s that we are enjoying with the extra volume of course, while some of the designers went for truly electrifying with the pink wigs added on top, as we hear Michael Jackson singing in the background of our minds. Ashish really had fun with the hot pink dizzying effects on the hair.
Backcombing and endless curls are the secret to the really voluminous hair, while Jeremy Scott and Gucci enjoy showing off the splendors of a truly fun era brought to 2016. The trend is all about the wild beauty of the soul and most designers have genuinely captured it beautifully.

#2: Finagle some French Pleats

There are braids and then there are plaits. One of the most intriguing fall/ winter 2016-2017 hairstyle trends is in the form of French pleats, which are more twisted creations across the center of the head and the crown than anything else, with a rather olden nobility feel to a few of the masterpieces, those spotted at Gareth Pugh a pretty specific and good example.
However, there are the modernized braided hairstyles as well, with a Mohawk style French pleat appearing at Kenzo and some really curly locks stealing the limelight at Giorgio Armani. This is a 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll hairstyle that can come in romantic or rebellious, quite versatile in its formation. Hold it tightly in place or allow the curls to roam free, but this must-have style for the coming fall and winter is simply something to mull over for those crazy awesome parties.

#3: Modern Twists on Traditional Hairstyles

Modern is a great look but traditional even more so. With so much of the focus on olden days on the runway shows during the past few months, we sometimes crave something new and fit for the world of today. As such, it makes perfect sense that some designers also think in a similar fashion and create hairstyles, which effectively celebrate the modernization of the olden and the creation of a modern twist to the traditional. Often with actual twists. Marchesa’s knotted bun at the nape of the neck is certainly a good example as the twisted strands have been pulled together to create a lovely sleek look that screams youthful sophistication.

#4: Figure the Use of Finger Waves

The loveliest of the olden meet newer fall 2016 hairstyles that we have seen on many a designer runway show is the use of finger waves, where it is just barely there but still adds that little touch of adorable sweetness to a look, softening a more severe style or adding a youthful bounce to an older ensemble. From Opening Ceremony to Dries Van Noten, Marc Jacobs to Jenny Packham, the finger waves popped up in New York, London, Milan and Paris, all four major Fashion Week catwalks featuring this style.
There was everything from the lacquered curls to the gentler looks in undulating fringes pulled to the side. The best was deemed to be Eugene Souleiman’s take on the style, a little gentler than Stella McCartney’s finger waves, which in of themselves were pretty soft, with the added bonus of a casual ponytail.
This is a lovely 1920s trend that has come back to the runway and makes for quite the ripple effect, Blumarine wearing it best out of all. A deep side part, lots of gel and a comb shaped S formation is exactly what the stylist ordered.

#5: Turn Up the Texture

Cookie cutter looks are so last decade it appears as we notice the ladies take to the catwalk in hairstyles that are all about the texture. These past years have really played up this concept of natural beauty and it is not a hairstyle that will see an end soon. On the contrary, it only seems to be evolving year on year. Since every woman is different, it only makes sense to also cast the models with different looks without the uniform designs on the runways.
Zac Posen is certainly on board with this and plays with curls, straights, waves or anything else, really focusing on the texture. Altuzarra’s mocha skinned models wore this look best with the lowlighted curly hair framing the face and lots of movement added to those luxurious tresses.
We see incredible ombre waves at Diane Von Furstenberg, generous blonde locks tucked into scarves at Missoni, more volume at Zac Posen, fresh out of the water waves at Chloe and so much more. Texture in the form of waves is one of the most common fall/ winter 2016-2017 hairstyle trends we find on the runways.

#6: Go Low with the Ponytail

Less is more is a mantra we have been hearing for about 2 to 3 years now, a saying that has become a big part of our way of thinking. This is really good for us girls, who really do not enjoy dressing up wildly or spending hours upon hours on our beauty appeal, particularly the hair. For the girl on the go, there needs to be a trend that is extremely easy to pull off and will also keep the prized tresses away from the face. This is where the gorgeous low ponytail comes in, a look that has been on the runways since the spring season of 2015 all the way until the fall of 2016.
A simple black hair tie should suffice for the look, ensuring elegance and youthfulness. It is all very simple when we spot the low ponytail on Salvatore Ferragamo, but there are pretty twists added come Prabal Gurung’s show, while the hair is used to create its own band to keep things in place at Cedric Charlier. Too pretty to pass this one up ladies!

#7: Create a Crimp

The crimped hairstyles have returned! Remember when there were crimpers being sold all over but you had noticed that they were much harder to get your hands on the past few years? This year they will be in abundance again as one of the bigger fall 2016 hairstyle trends is indeed the crimp.
You can be wearing a low ponytail such as at Vanessa Seward and have the whole of the hair crimped up to create immense volume; you can go all elven, part from the center and transport us to the 1980s in the process of it all, bringing up the crimp from the ears downwards, the crown effectively sporting a slick straight appearance at Gucci. As for Manish Arora, it is so nice to see a crimped Afro updo these days.

#8: Bunch Up into Ballerina Buns

Who does not love a good ballerina bun? Actually, it can also be considered a knot but not always. It is a classic bun that we see, though the fall 2016 hairstyle trends have definitely adapted the looks to everything from the ultra-chic to the messy to the rose looks of fantasy.
There are some double twists as with Christian Dior, and it gets all romantic with the slick pulling back of the hair from the crown at Valentino, a perfect bun higher up in the back of the head. Boss brings in the messy with aplomb and there is nothing one can say that would change the fact that the slightly undone look is by far the sexiest of the mix.

#9: Knot It Up

We still see ponytails around, but it is so much chicer to just create a lovely knot at the nape of the neck and leave our some strands for added texture, the messy loops and sleek chignons each appealing to a different personality. Some of the fall 2016 hairstyles appear more equestrian style with the pulled-apart illusion, something seen at Tory Burch, while some actually appeared in hairnet covers such as at Oscar de la Renta.
There were even some double knots made, ultra-cool in the double bun status at Dior. Messy was all the rage at Derek Lam though, with tendrils escaping everywhere, while things got really chic at Celine. As for Loewe, the perfect bun at the nape was all that was needed to appear the professional and dignified matriarch of the company or household.
Marchesa ensured to twist things up all modern style with the knots, while the whole thing turned into an interesting ponytail that rather reminds us of anime styles at Temperley London. The knots got a bit higher than the nape at times but no less sophisticated, increasingly bringing in the rose-like looks that we easily fall in love with. Valentino and Oscar de la Renta are front row contenders to this.

#10: Deepen the Side Part

In any hairstyle, a lady must have a center part, a side part or no part, all to varying degrees. There is no way around that. In terms of the fall/ winter 2016-2017 hairstyle trends, it quickly becomes apparent that the deeper side part is probably the best bet to go with come the cooler season, with little tendrils floating over the ears for added effect as seen at Stella McCartney.
Christian Dior’s side part with the tight chignon in the back allows for a better focus on the eyes and the lips creating a striking image. There is certain strength in the side part really, with Mugler really giving focus to a more naturally inclined beauty look than others. The modern woman exudes confidence and self-assurance, which is why this trend is rocking it right now.
Precision in the side part is very important, as we can easily see at Jason Wu and Marissa Webb. As for Proenza Schouler, who could ever doubt the prowess of the ladies walking for the designer house, the eyebrows kept thick as well for added strength to the step. Even the simpler hairstyles of Calvin Klein point to the affinities of the ladies who deign to part their hair to the side.

#11: Center the Part

While the deeper side part is definitely in and looks great, the creation of volume often relies on a center part from which to ground the whole look. At Zac Posen we are looking at dark and beautiful tresses cascading in curling waves down the back and framing the head and neck beautifully. At Missoni the textured hair gets tucked in after falling from a center part as well.
A flattened crown and color contrasts with the roots appear at Rag & Bone, the center part of it being the focus of attention while the short curls frame the face lovingly. For the wavy trend in general though, from BCBG to Sonia Rykiel, Ralph Lauren to Anna Sui and everyone else, the center part is what makes it so sexy in the first place. Even slicked fringes see a center part at Mary Katrantzou, ensuring the centralization is for any and all hairstyles for fall 2016.

#12: Crazy Curls

Texture you wanted and texture you got! The ladies sporting the little curls with a good amount of Afro have no parts and lots and lots of volume. Long hair that has been tamed, shorter hair that frames the head like a halo; no matter what length you give it, the fall/ winter 2016-2017 hairstyles have no parts and lots of hair involved.
Louis Vuitton really plays up this style and gives the models more confidence in what is their natural. From time to time you do see a center part and a flattening at the crown, the Rag & Bone ladies even sporting full contrasts with black roots and blonde ends. We love the ’80 style curls happening at Giorgio Armani actually and the Isabel Marant perms are so on our to-do list for the fall.

#13: Soft Imperfect Waves

Perfection is not what we want to go for when we are looking at the fall 2016 wavy hairstyles. On the contrary, we prefer the use of unprofessional methods, no irons or tongs or anything of the like; instead, it’s all about sleeping in a bun or a braid or simply plaiting those tresses on the way to work before releasing them at the office. Yes, you may not get the perfect wave, but that is where the secret lies for fall 2016.
You want the uniqueness of the looks and should revel in it, much as the purposeful cowlicks appear at BCBG Max Azria, or the messy look that comes out of Anna Sui. The ripple effect is what you are aiming for, while Ralph Lauren brings the focus to the just-got-out-of-bed sexy appeal, Sonia Rykiel making it appear like a man massed it up in the heat of passion.
The center part is most important here though as it adds a cooler edge and makes it easier to look great. These soft waves are described as the perfect Parisian quality club look with classic Bardot to it and very Kate Moss at Sonia Rykiel.

#14: Extra Long Hair

Whereas we have seen some shorter hairstyles in the past, this year is focused on the really long and really healthy, straight locks that reach down to the waist and beyond. It is shiny and smooth and when parted from the center, extremely beautiful, lengthening the facial structure itself as it cascades down the shoulders and the back.
There is an ethereal allure to it all and created with some really realistic extensions that one cannot differ from the actual tresses, that’s how good the match is. Carven, Elie Saab, H&M and many other designers opted to show off the hair that we simply cannot get enough of.

#15: Hair Tucked In

This as a trend that we noticed for the spring as well and it also made an appearance for the past fall. Tucking in the hair can get pretty annoying if you have a problem with your necking getting too warm though, while hair in of itself has a tendency to scratch and tickle, depending on its texture. The Missoni tuck into lovely thin scarves may look lovely but there is quite a bit of texture there and for the slightly more sensitive, this trend will not be one to adhere to easily. Though, for those who wish to add in some extra warmth for the winter, it is just perfect!

#16: Braids, Braids and More Braids

Have you been intrigued with the medieval shows that have been gracing television for years now? Have you found yourself fascinated with the hairstyles that are put together for the cast the most? You are not the only one really and we always love to see those same braids appear on the Fashion Week runways where designers show off their imaginative creations; where there are braids there is the effective blending of the old and the new.
The braids trend is not new either. We have been seeing it for a while now, though it seems to be evolving year on year. We see lovely French plaits and simper rails down the back. There are braided crowns and combined braid pigtails down the back for fall 2016. Some are held by a black band while others see bows at the ends.
It is definitely a look to covet and enjoy. From New York to Paris, the multitude of fall 2016 braided hairstyles really caught our eyes as they appeared in twin pigtails at Sally Laponte, secured into place and looking sleek, romantic and beautiful down the back at Mansur Gavriel, or as crowns to rival royalty at Moncler.

#17: Slip in Some Slick Hair

One look we were not expecting to make a comeback for the fall was the slick, wet appearance of the hair, with interesting ripples to emulate waves. Things get glossy pretty quickly and the whole of the crown if not the whole of the hair has that slick look to it. It is not a major trend, but definitely one worth noting since many were hoping it would disappear for a while.
Salvatore Ferragamo makes it look so lovely though, without the dirty aspect to it, while Prada has it appear that the ladies just stepped out of the shower and the curls framing the faces are all that one needs to look positively amazing. The hair is gelled down with a deep side part and a low ponytail at Marissa Webb, while the bangs look like they’ve been dipped in oil and pulled over the ear through a deep side part at Mugler.
The just out of the shower look is definitely one to emulate, particularly the whole Giambattista Valli thing happening where women are the ones being celebrated.

#18: Super Straight Hair

Pin-straight tresses used to be all the rage in the early 2000s as well but it appears that along with the curly and voluminous, we get the other extreme as well. And why not? We have been seeing contrasts everywhere really, from the clothing to the shoes to the hair colors, somehow noticing that so long as you appear as an individual, you can be sporting whatever you like, including pin-straight extensions.
Truly long and truly straight hair can be seen at Carven, H&M and Elie Saab, but that is not where it ends. Saint Laurent’s wet look locks are just as appealing, while pin-straight hair on short bobs with fringes can be found in abundance at Maison Margiela and Boss.

#19: Add a Bit of the ‘80s

When looking at the clothing and the shoes, we definitely saw some 1980s happening, the era one of the only that this year brought into play while not entirely shedding itself of the ‘70s as well. Texture, curls and volume, all the three aspects of the fall/ winter 2016-2017 hairstyle trends report written about separately also have a certain ‘80s flair, though not always, which is what earns them their own categories.
The ringlets make for some great looks, the Giorgio Armani short hairstyles complemented by the longer Isabel Marant perms. Rock ‘n’ Roll gets a modern recreation with Topshop Unique, the underground vibe rolling into pageant queen looks come the Jeremy Scott show with bouffant hairstyles and more. Burberry goes for a faux mullet in the mix of it all and we are left quite entertained as we notice the oldies become modern goodies.

#20: Freshen Up the Fringe

Had you missed fringes? Again with the contrasts, we have seen a whole lot of the straight and the curly, the long and the short, and now we focus on the fringe when most other fall 2016 hairstyles lacked it. But it was definitely a trend, even if not as big as some of the others, with the 1970s returning with this style that includes blunt cuts and some shaggier looks, perfectly sleek ones and some in the messy designs.
There is ombre hair and monochrome, along with some stark contrasts between the bangs and the hair cascading down the back. At Maison Margiela it is the simpler, shorter bobs, while Dolce & Gabbana revels in its embellishments and color contrasts. Boss, however, rather loves the brighter blonde tips to the ombre hair.
Returning in both a mini and XXL format, there is nothing you can’t enjoy here. Heavy side-swept bangs became a common sight at Isabel Marant, where it was all about showing of the Parisian style with an ‘80s style feel to it all, the little bit of hairspray added giving the look a more textured feel while still appearing soft in the blow-out.
